Decrypt mtDNA from teeth Vikings

Danish scientists from the University of Copenhagen for the first time were able to identify DNA from the skeleton Vikings, who died more than a thousand years ago. The outcome of their work published in PLoS ONE. Analysis of DNA obtained from the remains of people who lived thousands of years ago, could provide answers to many important issues concerning origin of hereditary diseases, explore ways of migration, ethnic origin. Scientists have identified the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the teeth and with a standard procedure reproduced the first hypervariable plot that DNA transmitted only on the maternal line, and several of its fragments, which previously was shown us with diseases. Scientists also identified belonging to genetic mitochondrial haplogroups potrevozhennyh Vikings. Half of the ten were treated as haplogroups H, others - to haplogroups K, T2, X2c, USa1a and I. One woman was classified as rare haplotypes Group H, meet in Eastern Europe, another two haplotypes haplogroups K and H were not identified in the database. Getting mtDNA complicated by many challenges, among them - a high probability of mixing genetic material from modern humans. Many previous results obtained in the analysis of mtDNA, challenged by the fact that fails to accurately establish its identity. Jorgen Disssing and his colleagues from the University of Copenhagen studied mtDNA from ten skeletons Vikings found on pre-Christian cemetery on the Danish island of Funen. This burial dates back to around the year 1000. To control Danes also studied the presence of impurity DNA fragments in samples isolated from the teeth exposed archaeological standard procedures, and identified a large number of impurities. Thus, firstly, the allocation of ancient mtDNA from teeth possible, and secondly, it should be done in special circumstances, before the samples will be studying archaeologists. click here
